Beacon House Classes and Meetings

The Beacon Recovery is a system of facilitated teaching. Far from being solely dependent on lecture, The Beacon Recovery depends on active class and after class participation by the Beacon House Residents. Each resident in Beacon House participates in the program. It is based on the textbook Alcoholics Anonymous. While the Beacon House admires the AA Fellowship, it is not affiliated with this 12-Step Program. These programs are generally led by graduates of the Beacon House or other individuals with long term sobriety and knowledge of the recovery process.

“Community” – Twice a week the Beacon House community meets for what is simply called “Community”. This is a resident driven peer accountability setting. Each resident is expected to express his “issues” related to any inappropriate behaviors as it relates to the community as a whole. Issues include items where the resident sees the problems that “are of his own making.” Recommendations are given to the resident to assist him in adapting to the community and a new way of life.

Alcoholics Anonymous study (A.K.A. “Big Book Study”) – Once a week an intensive study of the “textbook” for the first 12-Step Program, Alcoholics Anonymous, is held. This is generally facilitated by someone in a recovery program in the community. Each resident is required to be making progress through the 12-steps of recovery. It is also required that the resident have a sponsor to help guide them through the steps. Staff is available to help them progress as well.

AA Meeting – In addition to the above classes and meetings, Beacon House has welcomed into its facility outside AA groups to meet. The facility is an ideal place for such functions. The meeting room for these groups is more like a large living room than a typical meeting or class room. Currently two meetings gather each week at Beacon House: “Step On It Group” and “Miracle on Second”.
