Exciting things are happening at Beacon House!

This weekend “65 Cares” is coming to the Beacon House to take care of dozens of items on our “honey do list.” The list was compiled by one of our Resident Managers, John B, several weeks ago. A couple of days after the list was compiled, “65 Cares” called and said they were looking for projects. This group is made up of graduates of the 1965 class of Fern Creek High School. These talented individuals began doing various projects around Metro Louisville a few years ago as a way of giving back to a community that had been good to them. Someone suggested that the Beacon House might welcome some help.

Indeed!

The “65 Cares” group (about 12-15 strong) will join with about a dozen Beacon House residents to paint, do some plumbing, plastering, and other much needed items. They’ll begin on Friday and work all weekend. The “meat men” (members of the Board of Directors) will have a BBQ on Saturday evening for the workers.

Recently old flooring and carpeting was taken out of some of the residents’ rooms and replaced with new “Pergo” flooring. In addition, earlier this year all of the carpeting on the first floor of Beacon House was replaced with Pergo. It’s our hope to finish all of the rooms in the next six months.

We have also begun a process of replacing bed frames and mattresses. This is obviously being done on a few at a time and being done by replacing the most needed first. We’ll be replacing furniture in the rooms as well as we can and as money is available.

The kitchen is finished! It was completely remodeled with all new appliances. Previously five refrigerators were shared by 45 residents. Now we have a spacious walk in refrigerator, and each resident has his own locker. In addition the non perishable pantries have had locks installed, and each resident has his own key.

Progress. Sometimes quickly; sometimes slowly, but, as I said, exciting things are happening at the Beacon House.

Drop by to see us! I’m in my sixth month as CEO, and I couldn’t be more satisfied being in the thick of things here at the best recovery house in the US.

Brave journey.
